What is the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL)

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is research conducted in the classroom that documents instructional practices that enables student learning. SoTL studies always incorporate some direct measurement or authentic assessment of student learning. The results are expected to impact instructional design across disciplines.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) investigates instructional practices that are demonstrably linked with empirical evidence of student learning. These studies ultimately inform teaching strategies and enrich student learning. At the University of Central Oklahoma, student learning includes but is not limited to: discipline knowledge, civic engagement, health and wellness, global and cultural competence, leadership, and problem solving. Claims of transformative learning are not merely speculative but instead are supported by some mix of quantitative and qualitative data. Interdisciplinary teams of faculty may initiate SOTL research with implications for instruction across disciplines.

SoTL Scholars Community

Facilitators: Dr. John Wood and Dr. Jill Lambeth

The SoTL committee met in summer 2016 and created the new SoTL Scholars program. The SoTL scholars community consists of both faculty and staff, interested in creating SoTL research proposals. Members help each other with the development of research questions, selection of research design, and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) application process.

Who Can Be Part of the SoTL Scholars Community

SoTL Scholar Participants - Participants accepted into the program and in-process with their research.

SoTL Scholars - Participants with an accepted IRB, Presentation/Publication/or Grant, and completion of the program.

SoTL Scholar Mentors - Participants that have completed all of the above and have helped mentor the process of a SoTL Scholar.

SoTL Scholar Facilitators  - Participants that plan and orchestrate the meetings.

SoTL Lunch & Learn Community

Facilitators: Marty Ludlum, J.D. and Dr. Nesreen Alsbou

SoTL Lunch & Learn meetings are opportunities to learn more about SoTL research itself. Presenters make brief presentations on completed and in-process SoTL research projects. The floor is open to Q & A between the presenter and audience. Discussion may extend to practical tips for teaching and conducting SoTL research.

Who Can Be Part of the SoTL Lunch & Learn Community

SoTL Community Participants - Participants that attend lunches.

SoTL Community Presenters - Participants that attend and present.

SoTL Community Facilitators  - Participants that plan and orchestrate the meetings.
