Barry Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 with a goal to provide a "continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers" by awarding outstanding college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue careers in these fields. The Scholarship is the most prestigious undergraduate award given in the sciences and is awarded to about 300 students nationwide each year.

  • Award:
    • Up to $7,500 per academic year to cover undergraduate expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board. Sophomore awardees can expect to receive a maximum of two years of support, junior awardees are eligible for one year of support. 


In addition to the below criteria, candidates must be nominated through UCO. Candidates MAY NOT directly apply. Contact Dr. Chen for more information.

  • Must be a full time student with a sophomore or junior academic standing pursuing a bachelor's degree during the 2016-2017 academic year. "Junior" is defined as a student who plans to continue full time coursework leading to a bachelor's degree in May 2018
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or obtaining citizenship by the time of your junior year of undergraduate study
  • Have an average of at least a B or the equivalent and be in the upper fourth of his or her class
  • Commitment to a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering

How to Apply:

It is strongly recommended that you contact the Goldwater Scholarship faculty representative and your faculty mentors early in the application process.

  • Contact Dr. Wei Chen to set up an appointment to discuss the application process
  • Work with Dr. Chen and your faculty mentor(s) to create the content and complete the application process.
  • Obtain letters of recommendation, official transcripts, and resume stating your details of your experiences and achievement for application packet
  • Submit materials by the campus deadline to Dr. Chen to make sure you have everything needed for the electronic application process
