Tutoring Central at the University of Central Oklahoma

Supplemental Instruction at UCO

Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides peer-facilitated, out-of-class review sessions at no extra cost to any student enrolled in the course. SI was designed to increase student retention and student success in courses that have historically proven difficult for UCO students, such as courses that are high-enrollment. SI is not remedial; rather it is a learning enhancement program designed to organize and improve the ways in which students prepare for class outside of class by combining “what to learn” with “how to learn.”

Each SI Leader is attached to a specific course to provide students with a systematic and disciplined approach for processing the subject material assigned by the professor. The SI Leader is a student who demonstrated proficiency in a targeted subject and undergone SI training. SI features weekly review sessions, 2-3 times per week, that are open to all students in the selected course who choose to attend. Sessions involve students in active learning by comparing and reviewing class notes, discussing important concepts, preparing for tests and exams, and developing study strategies appropriate to the course material. The SI leader uses interactive learning strategies that encourage involvement, comprehension and synthesis of subject content, and the program has proven to help increase students success in the targeted and future courses.

Faculty, please contact Darla Sherman, Manager for Tutoring Central and the SI program, at extension 974-3495 or email SI@uco.edu if you are interested in being a part of the SI program.
