To the UCO Community:
The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Association stands proudly with all Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and undocumented students at Central.
The recent decision to terminate DACA by the current administration leaves our students fearful of the uncertainty of the future. It has been estimated that there are 75,000 individuals that are LGBTQ who have benefited from DACA in the U.S. The fear of deportation back to countries that have poor LGBTQ human rights are in the forefront of their minds.
Our mission is to foster a safe and supportive campus climate in which LGBTQIA+ faculty and staff members feel welcome and will be able to live their lives openly and with pride. The mission to live freely is one that we would hope all members of the UCO community would have.
This five-year-old program has allowed our students who were brought to the U.S. as minors to work legally so that they can provide for themselves, their loved ones, and their education. As you may know, DACA and undocumented students are not eligible for federal financial assistance and must pay their way themselves. We are incredibly proud of our DACA and undocumented students and their continued success at Central, despite the obstacles that they must face.
The LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Association implores that you take action by reaching out to our elected representatives to find a reasonable pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients and their families, not only for their success in higher education, but for their safety in our community as well.
The LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Association
Founded in 2016, the University of Central Oklahoma’s LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Association was formed to celebrate and support the lives of our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual + Faculty and Staff community, as well as Allies and students. The Association meets monthly and offers members a chance to get acquainted and learn from one another, as well as discuss current issues and upcoming events within both the UCO and Metro communities.
In addition to our monthly meetings, we offer members the chance to get involved in any of our seven subcommittees: Alumni Engagement Committee, Membership and Nomination Committee, Scholarship Committee, Social and Cultural Events Committee, Student Engagement and Retention (Mentorship) Committee, Web and Social Media Presence Committee, and Advocacy Committee. These subcommittees are designed to advocate, educate, and spread awareness on the LGBTQIA+ community.
