TRIO College Programs: Student Support Services
Student Support Services is a federally-funded program that supports first-generation college students, low-income students, and students with disabilities by providing academic workshops, cultural activities, research visits, graduate school visits, tutoring, mentoring, and scholarship opportunities. UCO hosts six SSS programs detailed below:
SSS STRIVE - Student Transformations: Realizing the Importance and Value of Education
The University of Central Oklahoma’s SSS STRIVE program serve 140s students enrolled at the university. The ultimate goal of the SSS STRIVE program is to increase both the academic and non-cognitive successes of participants.
SSS SYNERGY - Synergistic Education, Uniting the Sciences
The University of Central Oklahoma’ SSS SYNERGY program provides quality education to 120 low-income, first-generation, and students with disabilities who are enrolled in a STEM or Health Sciences field. SSS SYNERGY participants will also be actively engaged in undergraduate research projects with faculty mentors who specialize in a STEM or Health Science field.
SSS TEACH - Transforming Education, Achieving Community Hope
The University of Central Oklahoma’s SSS TEACH program prepares 140 students enrolled at UCO who are low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities to join the teacher corps. UCO will employ a holistic, individualized college coaching strategy that has been shown to positively impact college persistence rates to ensure eligible K-12 teacher candidates obtain a teaching degree and certification as highly-qualified teachers. The program will enhance the coaching strategy by using evidence-based interventions and tools.
SSS TEAM - Transformative Education Achieves More
The University of Central Oklahoma’s SSS TEAM program serves 100 students with disabilities enrolled at the university who are low-income and/or first-generation. Based on the individualized coaching plan of the SSS TEAM program, participants will receive targeted services to overcome personal, career, and academic challenges—advising, near peer coaching, financial aid advising, FAFSA one-on-one assistance, financial and economic literacy workshops, graduate school visits, tutoring, mentoring, study skills workshops, graduate prep curriculum, research opportunities, social and cultural events, and grant aid.
SSS SALUTE - Serving America’s Leaders Using Transformative Education
The University of Central Oklahoma’s SSS SALUTE program serves 120 veteran students enrolled at the university who are low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities. The ultimate goal of the SSS SALUTE program will be to increase both the academic and non-cognitive successes of veterans so that they can become engaged citizens and leaders in their community.
SSS LA META - Latino Americans Motivating, Educating, and Transforming America
The SSS LA META program serves 140 low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities whose ESL categorization may place at high risk for academic failure. Via individualized coaching and peer and faculty mentoring, eligible students will address non-cognitive enrichment.
