DOING TL IN THE CLASSROOM

Keynote by Saundra Yancy McGuire

Dr. Saundra McGuire will be our 2017 Transformative Learning keynote speaker. She is the Director Emerita of the Center for Academic Success and Retired Assistant Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her book Teach Students How to Learn: Strategies You can Incorporate into Any Course to Improve Student Metacognition, Study Skills, and Motivation (2015, Stylus) is considered a must read by higher education faculty.

Dr. McGuire will explain how transformation occurs within students in the classroom when they move from novice thinkers to expert thinkers through metacognition. She will offer tangible strategies to get students to become independent thinkers who can control, recognize, and monitor their own learning.

“I always say to students ‘It’s like you have a big brain outside of your
brain looking at what your brain is doing” (McGuire, 2015, p. 16)

Research conducted by Cook, Kennedy, and McGuire (2013) found that after acquiring a variety of these learning strategies almost 700 students in general chemistry courses were more successful then those without the learning strategies. These students were able to move from lower level thinking focused on memorization to higher level conceptual thinking.

In her WORKSHOP during the afternoon of March 2, McGuire will address the significant role students’ psychoacademic needs play in their motivation to learn. The workshop will focus on tangible ideas to address these needs in order to increase students’ motivation to learn.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

In 2006, the University of Central Oklahoma added transformative learning to the University mission statement:

The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) exists to help students learn by providing transformative education experiences to students so that they may become productive, creative, ethical and engaged citizens and leaders serving our global community.

The Transformative Learning Conference emerged seven years ago as a venue for UCO faculty to share their experiences, strategies, and challenges of incorporating transformative learning into their courses.  In 2015, the Conference moved off campus and became a national discussion on applied TL.  The following year, international scholars joined the Conference.  In the last several years, around 350 scholars have joined the discussion considering everything from conceptualizing and measuring TL to creating official student records of their transformative education.
