Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

The Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology is designed to complete the academic and practical preparation for individuals seeking the professional credentials for working with persons who exhibit disordered communication. The program is designed to prepare individuals to serve in a variety of professional settings and with a variety of populations. Completion of the program satisfies requirements for the Oklahoma State Department teaching certificate, the Oklahoma Board of Examiners license, and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology. The Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program at the University of Central Oklahoma is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700.

Basic courses in normal and disordered human communication, completed either as part of the undergraduate major or as graduate prerequisites, must precede application for admission to the graduate program. Upon admission to the graduate program, students complete graduate level courses and any remaining required undergraduate level courses to further their understanding of normal and disordered human communication. Ultimately, students apply this knowledge in accumulating a minimum number of practicum clock hours representing experiences with a variety of disorders, settings and populations.

Capstone Experiences

During the second year of the graduate program students are required to complete two capstone experiences - an Evaluating Clinical Effectiveness research project and the graduate program Comprehensive Examination. The Evaluating Clinical Effectiveness research project is integrated with a clinical practicum assignment, typically during the same semester as the Public School Internship. These research projects are normally developed based on single-subject treatment designs (discussed in SLP4713 Clinical Methods in SLP) and intended to document the efficacy of a specific treatment approach or procedure with a specific client.

The graduate program Comprehensive Exam is administered during the final semester of the graduate program. The Comprehensive Examination will be scheduled approximately one month prior to the first advisable testing window for   Praxis® Examination in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology administered through ETS. The "ASHA Praxis" exam is required to obtain the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence, the Oklahoma Board of Examiners License, and is accepted by the Oklahoma State Department of Education for the Oklahoma Teaching License/Certificate. The Oklahoma Subject Area Test is also acceptable, but optional, for obtaining the Oklahoma Teaching Certificate.

Immediately after taking the Comprehensive Exam each student will be given his or her overall pass-fail result and an item analysis of test results. The Comprehensive Examination is intended to accomplish at least three objectives. First, we hope to identify any gaps in each student's preparation so that those can be remedied prior to graduation. Second, it is hoped that remedying these deficiencies will prepare students for the ASHA Praxis (and possibly the OSAT) examination. In this way, we consider the Comprehensive Examination as a "warm-up" exercise. Third, the Comprehensive Examination is intended to be a program "self-assessment" tool for evaluating our program and the preparation we provide to our students.

Dates for administering the Comprehensive Examinations will be set at the start of the Spring semester. A program review conducted by faculty members may be scheduled prior to the Comprehensive Examination.

Graduate Assistantships

Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Assistantship positions require various duties associated with each position and in turn provide a salary and partial tuition waiver. Duties generally associated with graduate assistant positions are described below.

GA positions require 10 or 15 hours per week. Monthly pay (paid bi-weekly) is approximately $400 for 10-hour positions and $600 for 15-hour positions. Those GAs in 10-hour positions and in 15-hour positions receive tuition waivers each semester. Some graduate assistant appointments will be for both semesters and others may be for either Fall or Spring. Specific start dates will be announced in the summer. Applicants who have submitted all required materials (listed below) to the Program Coordinator must be interviewed prior to final selections. The graduate admissions interview can also serve as the initial interview for a Graduate Assistant position.

Position Descriptions

Inez Miller Endowed Chair GA: (two 10-hour GA positions)

Inez Miller Endowed Chair Graduate assistants are assigned to assist the Director and/or Holder of the Endowed Chair. In addition to assisting with the annual Inez Miller Conference on Communication Disorders and Sciences, the Graduate Assistants (GAs) will assist with projects proposed by the Endowed Chair, the Director of the Endowed Chair, and those developed within the program by faculty. Inez Miller GAs should be capable of working independently once given an assignment and should have at least beginning-level computer skills. A schedule for weekly meetings and timelines for projects will be arranged each semester based on each GA's schedule and his or her faculty supervisor. The GAs will generally be required to obligate approximately 10 hours per week toward the projects being addressed that semester.

UCO Hearing Impaired Preschool Classroom GA: (typically four 10-hour per week GA positions)

Graduate assistants in the UCO Hearing Impaired Preschool are supported each semester through an annual contract with Oklahoma School for the Deaf. These GAs are engaged in assisting the Director of the Preschool. Preschool GAs must have at least beginner-level skills in Signing Exact English. The Preschool serves 10-20 children from a number of school districts in and around the metropolitan area who are hearing impaired and may present other challenging conditions as well. The schedule for the Preschool follows the calendar for the Edmond Public Schools.

The duties of these GAs include at least the following:

1.       Assisting with the daily classroom management activities to include
             a.       greeting children in arriving at and leaving the Preschool;
             b.       preparing and serving snacks;
             c.       accompanying children to restroom, playground;
             d.       assisting with classroom and child clean up.

2.       Developing teaching materials and activities for group sessions.
3.       Providing ongoing language stimulation.
4.       Assisting with hearing evaluations, tympanograms, and auditory trainers.


UCO Scott F. McLaughlin Speech & Hearing Clinic GA: (one 15-hour per week GA position - available Fall, Spring, and Summer)

The UCO Speech & Hearing Clinic GA assists the Clinical Coordinator and faculty of the Speech-Language Pathology program in maintaining the operations of the UCO Scott F. McLaughlin Speech & Hearing Clinic. The duties of the SFM Clinic GA require that person to understand terms and concepts related to procedures in the evaluation and treatment of speech language disorders so that he/she can effectively assist the Clinic Coordinator. In addition, the GA must interact and consult with the public in a knowledgeable manner that reflects the professionalism expected in a clinical facility. Duties begin one week prior to and end one week following each semester. A three-quarter time GA will be expected to obligate 15 hours per week to assisting in the Speech & Hearing Clinic.

Responsibilities include at least the following:

  1. Assisting in scheduling individual client appointments for bi-weekly sessions in the clinic for treatment of speech-language disorders in children and adults.
    1. The SFM Clinic schedules approximately 40 graduate and 10 undergraduate student clinicians to serve approximately 100 individual clients each semester. Scheduling occurs prior to each semester.
  2. Assisting with development of materials related to scheduling individual client appointments:
    1. Develop room schedules based on client needs & limitations.
    2. Establish and maintain secure individual client records.
    3. Assist in promulgating information to clients and supervisors.
    4. Maintain/inventory clinical supplies and materials based on needs of clinicians and clients.
  3. Assisting with scheduling screening and evaluation procedures.
    1. Obtain initial contact information through interviewing clients or facilities requesting services.
    2. Contact clients and facilities to assist in assignment of clinicians and supervisors.
    3. Assist in scheduling Screenings at Preschools/Daycares throughout the Edmond and north OKC area.

GA Application Process

Application Deadline:  Deadlines for applications to be received by the SLP Program Director is the same as for graduate admissions. GA application materials can be included with graduate admission materials. Recommendations submitted for graduate admission can also serve for the GA application. Applicants should consider asking those who are providing admissions recommendations to also address the applicant's potential for serving as a Graduate Assistant as they compose their recommendations. GA recommendations may also be submitted separately.

Application Materials: All application files for graduate assistant position must contain:

  1. The completed application form (Available Fall 2018).
  2. An application letter describing the applicant's background, interests, relevant skills, and financial needs.
  3. current resume'.
  4. Three letters of recommendation from college level instructors from whom you have taken courses in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology. Recommendations submitted for admission to the program can be used to meet this requirement as long as the recommender addresses the applicant's potential to serve as a graduate assistant.
