Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA)

X-Ray machine

The DXA is a machine that uses lower amounts of radiation than a normal X-ray and provides much more information. It will read your bone mineral density and body composition. Your body composition is broken down to muscle mass, fat mass and bone mass by measuring the density of the tissues. A print out is provided with all the information that the scan can bring and includes where you stand in comparison to those your age and gender. This is highly advantageous as we age, it is good to know what state our bones are in.

  • Location: UCO Kinesiology Lab at the Wellness Center
  • Who will be doing the scan? A trained Exercise Science graduate student or a faculty member.
  • What should I bring? Bring yourself and were comfortable clothes that contain no metals including a zipper. Do not wear jewelry or be prepared to remove any jewelry.
  • Do I need to make an appointment? Yes, when you pay for your Annual membership you can ask to set up an appointment or be put in contact with the CALL director.
  • Can I have a DXA done and not buy an Annual Membership? Yes, a scan costs $50, just ask to speak with the CALL director.
