Overview

The Multicultural Education Institute at the University of Central Oklahoma unites educators across Oklahoma to share the latest strategies and practices that help improve educating our increasingly diverse communities.

The Multicultural Education Institute is organized as a two-day conference.  The first day on Friday, February 22, 2019, begins at 4:30 p.m. and features an evening banquet, live performances, and a keynote speaker.  The second day on Saturday, February 23, 2019, begins at 8:30 a.m. and features the breakout sessions, afternoon luncheon, and live performances.  Those interested in presenting in the Saturday breakout sessions should refer to the Call for Presentations section below.  

Lodging

MEI has reserved rooms at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Edmond for the duration of the Institute.  The MEI room rate is $95.00 a night.  Attendees must ask for the lodging MEI rate when making reservations by using the code: MEI-Conference.

Call for Presentations

MEI is currently accepting presentation proposals!  Presentation proposal submission is also open to graduate students; graduate students should submit the Graduate Student Call for Presentations Form.  The deadline to submit a presentation proposal has been extended to Friday, February 1, 2019.

If your proposal is accepted and you present at MEI, you and all co-presenters will receive complimentary registration to the entire event.

 

Registration

To register for the 36th Annual Multicultural Education Institute, please complete a registration form linked below.  The MEI Planning Committee accepts registrations of school or district groups with purchase orders.  School funds can be used for this event (Title I – Migrant Education, Title II – 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Title III – IDEA-B, Title VII – Indian Education).

Standard Registration Rate: $70.00 per attendee
Full-Time Student Registration Rate: $60.00 per attendee

Full-time students receive a discount on MEI registrations.  The University of Central Oklahoma defines full-time student status as taking 12 undergraduate or 9 graduate hours in a fall/spring semester.  Full-time student status for the spring 2019 semester is required for full-time student registration.  Full-time student attendees are NOT required to take TESL 4960/5960 to receive full-time student registration pricing.

You can receive undergraduate and graduate college credit for attending the Multicultural Education Institute.  Individuals interested in attending the Multicultural Education Institute and receiving course credit by enrolling in TESL 4960/5960 should include their student information on the necessary boxes of the registration.

Note to Current UCO Students: Current UCO students that want to attend MEI for course credit (TESL 4960/5960) AND will not register with a purchase order through a school district or community group should register for MEI in person at the Office of Curriculum & Instruction in Suite 124 of the Chambers Library on the UCO main campus.

The registration deadline for the Multicultural Education Institute is Monday, February 11, 2019.

Registrations for MEI are transferable to new attendees within a purchase order from a school, school district, and other organization.  To shift a registration to a new attendee, contact (405) 974-5721.  MEI will offer registration refunds.  The deadline for refunds is Friday, February 8, 2019.

 

Vendor Spaces

MEI invites companies and community organizations to have display tables at the event.  Space applications are divided into three categories: Artisan/Craft, Exhibit, and Service Agency/Professional Group.  Artisans and craft vendor spaces are for individuals and small or local businesses and cost $35.00.  Exhibit spaces are for commercial organizations such as publishers and cost $150.00.  As always, service agencies and professional groups do not pay a fee for table space at MEI.

The deadline for Vendor Space Applications is Monday, February 11, 2019.

Recipients are selected from nomination applications.  To nominate an outstanding contributor to multicultural education, please click the appropriate nomination application from the above hyperlinks.  The deadline for ‘of the Year Award nominations is Monday, February 11, 2019.

 

Teacher Incentive Grants

MEI awards multicultural classroom project funding to Oklahoma teachers with the Teacher Incentive Grant.  If you are a classroom teacher in an Oklahoma school district and want to implement a multicultural project in your classroom, please submit a Teacher Incentive Grant Award application:

The deadline for Teacher Incentive Grant applications is Monday, February 11, 2019.

 

Youth Participation

High school students can participate in the Multicultural Education Institute. High school students can contribute a submission to the Multicultural High School Student Essay, Poster, & Video Contest relating to this year’s theme of “Civil Discourse for Equity”.

Student award winners and their guardians receive complimentary seating at the Friday night banquet. The deadline for submissions to the Multicultural High School Student Contest is Monday, February 11, 2019.
