College of Fine Arts and Design

Welcome from the Director

Thanks for visiting our website.  The UCO School of Music continues to shatter the perceptions of those that might think of The University of Central Oklahoma as a “commuter” school, or a small regional university, or as “Central State.”  With more than 330 music majors and a dynamic graduate program of over 60 students, the UCO School of Music is constantly growing and establishing an international reputation because of our world-class faculty, award-winning ensembles, exceptionally talented students, and our thriving metropolitan environment.

Our Jazz Studies Division has been recognized with Downbeat Awards, and the Musical Theatre Division dominated the Kennedy Center Awards at a recent American College Theatre Festival.  Our band program hosts Pulitzer and Grammy Award-Winning composers in residence each year, and UCO Wind Symphony recordings have been praised by composers and critics alike. The “Stampede of Sound” marching band continues to grow and hosts several high school events every season.  UCO Choral Ensembles have performed as Honor Groups all over the world and right here at home at the OkMEA convention. Our piano division hosts The Kuleshov International Piano Competition, and boasts one of the finest Clavinorchestra keyboard ensembles in the country.  The Opera program produces a main stage production, a Children’s Opera, and an opera scenes production every year, and our fine orchestral ensembles are featured not only on their own season concert series, but they also share the stage with international soloists, Broadway stars, and our combined choral forces for a Masterworks production each year.  The Brisch Center for Historical Performance provides students and faculty with an education in historical performance practice, including performance opportunities on historical instruments and modern replicas, and it houses one of the most impressive library collections of primary resources on the history of performance, performance practice, and music education in the world.  And of course, the oldest and most established pillar of our School of Music remains the music education program, where today’s students become tomorrow’s teachers through an exceptional curriculum, sound pedagogical practices, and hands-on teaching experiences with our partner schools.

A world-class education doesn't have to come at a world-class cost!

Come and discover this place where the quality of the education and the cost of the experience add up to the BEST VALUE in higher education:  A degree from the University of Central Oklahoma School of Music!
