Graduate Student Timeline

The timeline shown here is intended to help students navigate through the degree in a timely manner. Submission of the forms listed in the table by the recommended/required due date will be used as part of the assessment of good standing in the department. First semester enrollment: Speak to your Major Advisor prior to enrolling in courses your first semester. Courses completed as a graduate student before formation of the Advisory Committee will be accepted as part of the Plan of Study at the discretion of the student's Advisory Committee.

Form Advisory Committee (Form I)

First semester

File Form I with Graduate College and Biology Graduate Program Advisor

Immediately following meeting (must be filed by the end of the first semester to remain in good standing in the department)

Develop Plan of Study (Form II)

Any change(s) to the Plan of Study during the course of the degree requires a new Form II to be filed with both the Graduate College and the Biology Graduate Program Advisor.

First semester

File Form II with Graduate College and Biology Graduate Program Advisor

Immediately following meeting (must be filed by the end of the second semester to remain in good standing)

Submit Thesis Proposal (Form III)

The Advisory Committee must have your thesis proposal at least one week prior to the meeting to approve the proposal. A full description of the thesis proposal guidelines can be found starting on page 13 of the Biology Department Graduate Program Guide.

End of second semester

File Form III with Graduate College and Biology Graduate Program Advisor

Immediately following meeting (must be filed by the end of third semester to remain in good standing)

Progress Meetings (Form IV)

Once per academic year

File Form IV with Biology Graduate Program Advisor

Immediately following meeting (must be filed at least once per academic year to remain in good standing)

Enroll in Thesis Hours

Once you begin enrollment in Thesis Hours, you must enroll in at least 1 Thesis Hour per semester until you graduate. See page 8 of the Biology Department Graduate Program Guide for Thesis Hour information.

Last two semesters (three hours each of last two semesters)

Schedule a Thesis Defense Date (http://www.uco.edu/graduate/current/ThesisDefenseSchedulingForm.pdf)

Advisory Committee members must receive a copy of your thesis at least two weeks prior to the defense date. A defense date cannot be scheduled until all members of the Advisory Committee agree the thesis is ready to defend. A full description of the thesis guidelines can be found starting on page 16 of the Biology Department Graduate Program Guide.

Last semester (defense must occur at least two weeks before finals week in fall and spring, or at least 10 days prior to finals week in the summer semester)

File Form VI with Graduate College and Biology Graduate Program Advisor

Must be done at least two weeks prior to defense date

Submit Thesis Summary Document to Graduate College

Must be done at least two weeks prior to defense date (submit with Form VI)

Advertise Public Thesis Defense

Must be done at least one week prior to defense date

File Thesis Page, Signature Page, and Thesis Abstract with the Graduate School

Upon successful completion of the thesis defense (must be submitted by last day of classes)

Submit Hard Copies of Final Thesis to Library for Binding (Minimum 2 copies); Submit Electronic Copy of Final Thesis to Library

Once final draft is complete
