An open letter from Dr. Anastasia Wickham, Program Coordinator:
Thank you for your interest in the English Education Program at the University of Central Oklahoma. This website provides useful information and links to resources for teacher education candidacy and certification.
The English Education program provides high-quality preparation to enable candidates to successfully undertake the challenges of the teaching profession upon graduation. As Program Coordinator, I am available to help students navigate the program. Before moving into this role, I taught both middle school and high school. These experiences, combined with my passion for English education and my ongoing efforts to remain current in the field, allow me to support students in reaching their professional goals.
Teacher candidates in English Education take courses in the Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and in the Department of Professional Teacher Education located in the College of Education and Professional Studies. The program also provide three field experiences in middle and high schools, allowing teacher candidates to learn from mentor teachers and put into practice the knowledge they have gained through coursework.
Among other program requirements, students must pass three state certification tests, apply to Teacher Education and for student teaching, and maintain a grade point average of 2.75. Upon successful completion of UCO's B.A. Ed. degree and after completing state requirements, graduates are certified to teach grades 6-12 in Oklahoma.
Please use the six tabs found to the left of this letter to find more information regarding UCO's English education program and state and national requirements for certification and success in your future career.
More information can be found in the Teacher Education Handbook located here.
