Western Pacific Institute

Western Pacific Institute logoThe Western Pacific Institute was founded in 1991 with an explicit goal of facilitating better understanding between the United States and Western Pacific nations. Supported by the university, College of Liberal Arts and the Department of History and Geography, it has successfully hosted international symposiums; US-Japan in 1992, US-China, Hong Kong in 1993, US- ASEAN in 1994, US-Northeast China in 1995.

It also provides contacts and administrative assistance for faculty and student exchange programs. The institute has held essay contests for international students at the University of Central Oklahoma. For further information contact Dr. XiaoBing Li at 974-5483 or bli@uco.edu.

UCO/Western Pacific Institute Host International Conference

The 2017 International Conference on Energy Security and U.S.-China Relations will be held at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma on March 21-23, 2017. Several paper sessions and round-table discussions will take place during the conference.

Possible topics for the conference are expected to embrace the theme of “Energy Security,” and may include, but are not limited to, trade, cultural, political, and educational relations between the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC). In addition to extensive academic presentations, the conference features keynote speeches and panel discussions.

2016-17 U.S.-Asia Research Paper Contest

The Department of History and Geography and the Western Pacific Institute recently announced the 2016-17 U.S.-Asia Research Paper Contest.

All UCO undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to submit an original research paper that analyzes topics involving geopolitical relations (including trade, political affairs, and cultural contacts) between the United States and Asia.
