CRISP Frequently Answered Questions for International Students

Does participating in the CRISP program mean that I will live with an American family?

No, participating in the CRISP program does not mean that you will live in the home of an American family. The goal is for you to spend time with your American family at least once per month through activities such as: participating in local events together, spending holidays together, and attending family gatherings so that you can experience firsthand how an American family interacts.

What is the commitment for this program?

Participants are asked to maintain contact throughout one entire school year (September to April) through spending time together at least once a month, and communicating regularly through email and phone conversations. The more time you spend together, the better the experience you will have with the program!

What are the requirements for participating in CRISP?

In order to join CRISP, you must be currently enrolled as an International student at UCO. You will also need to have an open mind and be eager to learn about the American culture.

How much does the CRISP program cost?

There are no costs to join the CRISP program. However, there may be occasional personal costs. For instance, if you go out for coffee with your family you may have to pay for your own coffee. Although the family may offer to pay for you, you should always be prepared to pay. In American culture, it is assumed that everyone will pay for themselves. If someone else wants to pay, they will initiate that.

How will I benefit from the CRISP program?

Through participating in the CRISP program you will receive benefits that will last a lifetime. You will learn about the American culture and experiences firsthand. You will be able to have a "home away from home" during your stay at UCO. You will also be able to share your own culture with your CRISP family. This allows you to connect with someone other than students, and to help you through the process of being in a new environment.

How do I sign up?

If you are interested in signing up to participate in the CRISP program you can fill out an online application form located on the bottom of the CRISP home page. If you would like more information you can stop by the Office of International Services in the Nigh University Center, Room 137, to speak with someone in person.

What happens after you apply to be a part of the CRISP program?

After you send in your CRISP application, we will use the information you submitted to pair you with an American family. Later, you will receive detailed information on the kickoff event in September where you get to meet your CRISP family for the first time! If there are not enough applications to pair you with a family, we will put you on a waiting list until a new family is available.
