Nigh University Center Ballrooms

Theme: Moonlight

This year’s theme, inspired by Barry Jenkin’s Academy Award Winning film Moonlight, is focused on students shifting and (re)discovering their identity as young, Black males. Moon reflects inaccessible, unknown or impossible notions of thinking, while light allows the shifting or reimagining of these narratives. The purpose of the Black Male Summit is to, in the words of James Baldwin, “illuminate [the] darkness...so that we [as young Black men] will not, in all our doing, lose sight of [our] purpose.”

Mission:  The mission of the Black Male Summit is to: (1) address the historical, cultural and relevant challenges that affect the development of young black males, (2) build pipelines between UCO and public and private high schools across the state of Oklahoma, and (3) encourage the pursuit of obtaining a postsecondary degree.
