Black History Month 2017 - "What's Next?"

Black History Month Kickoff:Wednesday, February 1st starting at 2:00pm in the Nigh University Center Ballroom A

Join us as we kick off this years illustrious Black History Month with keynote speaker, Ebony Dallas, UCO alumna, award-winning artist, designer, and founder of Afrikanation Artist. The African American Faculty/Staff Association and Black Student Association will proudly recognize individuals who are making significant contributions to our UCO campus and community.

Miss Black UCO Scholarship Pageant: Saturday, February 4th doors open at 6:30pm & pageant starts at 7:00pm in the Nigh University Center, Constitution Hall

You are cordially invited to experience the 33rd Miss Black UCO pageant. Five students will compete for the 2017 title and crown. This year's theme is "Epoch of Eminence: Celebrating the Magic of the Black Women". Entry is free with UCO ID or $7.00 without UCO ID.

Be-YOU-tiful: Tuesday, February 7th from 6:00pm-7:30pm in the Nigh University Center, Cherokee Room

This event is centered on uplifting and inspiring women to be themselves no matter what anyone else has to say. We would like to provide women with resources and assist those who like to wear make-up, wear weaves, rock their natural hair, thrift, etc.

The System of European Supremacy and African American Inferiority: February 8th from 2:00pm to 3:30pm in the Nigh University Center, Heritage Room

Dr. Paul Lehman will come and discuss his new book The System of European American Supremacy and African American Inferiority. A question segment will follow. Also, refreshments will be served.

Black History Month Scavenger Hunt: February 8th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm in the Nigh University Center

A fun scavenger hunt tied to Black History Month.

Black Card Revoked: February 9th starting at 12:00pm in the Nigh University Center, Room 201

Join the Black Student Association as they play a game that deals with black culture and customs. Will your black card be revoked?

Barbershop Talk: February 9th from 7:00 to 9:00pm in the Nigh University Center, Robert S Kerr

This event is tailored to male students. This event will consist of things that typically happen in barbershops such as haircuts, music, some food, and riveting conversation.

Zumba for Heart Health: February 13th starting at 7:08pm in the Nigh University Center, Robert S Kerr

This event is targeted towards the importance of heart health and healthy blood pressure. We will bring attention to participants’
current blood pressure and challenge them to improve blood pressure, if needed. We will finish with a Zumba class led by a certified instructor.

Secret Crushes: February 14th from 11:00am to 2:00pm in the Nigh University Center Food Court

Students will be given the chance to send secret crushes to their crushes, friend, or significant others for Valentine’s Day.

What Happens at Home Stays at Home: February 15th starting at 1:30pm in the Nigh University Center, 320B

A look into the stigmas of dealing with mental illness within black families and how to move past it.

Big XII Conference on Black Student Government: February 16-18 in Austin, TX

Triumph over Adversity: The Power of the Negro Spiritual: February 22nd from 2:00pm to 3:30pm in the Nigh University Center, Will Rogers Room 

Understanding the influence of the "Negro Spiritual" and the power of the Negro Spirituals as a religious and political coping tool in the midst of adversity of American slavery.

Harlem Renaissance Revamped: February 22nd from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in Nigh University Center, Ballrooms A & B

An event to showcase arts (dance, poetry, song, paintings etc.) in the black community and reference how those before us influenced today’s artist.

Phirst Impressions: February 23rd starting at 7:00pm in the Nigh University Center, Heritage Room

Teaching students proper etiquette skills, dress attire, and interview readiness. This also includes an open discussion on the way we should carry ourselves and the way we are perceived through stereotypes and social media. It is time for us to break the chains for generations to come.

Clara Luper Room Dedication: February 24th starting at 2:00pm in the Nigh University Center, Heritage Room

Room dedication ceremony to Clara Luper, a prominent figure in Oklahoma civil rights.
