The purpose of Diversity Leadership Institute helps students to identify with their own culture (Cultural Identity), become informed about other cultures and behavior (Knowledge), understand the feelings and needs of others (Empathy), and become aware of one’s own desires, strengths, weaknesses and emotional stability (Self-Confidence). The activities, workshops, and discussions work to build cultural competent leaders who are challenged to assess their perceptions about themselves and others in regard to differences.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will describe the impact of their cultural experiences and their approach to leadership.

  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the complex social and cultural identities that other people may face and be able to identify issues of students’ individual differences, such as gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social class, and ability/disability.

  • Students will identify the cultural differences in verbal and nonverbal communication.

  • Students will initiate and develop interactions with individuals from different cultures.

  • Students will choose and critique a major theory of social justice; spiritual development; racial/ethnic identity development; gay, lesbian, and bisexual identity development; gender identity development; disability; class; and multicultural/multiracial identity development. 

Participants will depart from the University of Central Oklahoma on May 16th and will return on May 20th, 2018. The institute will take place in Houston, TX.

Students who apply to DLI will need to attend three (3) mandatory pre-departure meetings on March 29, April 12, and April 19 from 3:00pm-4:00pm in the Will Rogers Room, NUC 421. 

  • There is a $250.00 fee to attend Diversity Leadership Institute. This fee will cover your hotel, travel, and some meals. Students are responsible for lunches and some dinners throughout the trip to Houston, TX.

  • A non-refundable deposit of $100 is due Thursday, March 1st by 5:00 p.m. The remaining balance will be due in the following manner: $75 on Thursday, March 29th by 5:00pm and $75 on Thursday, May 3rd by 5:00pm.

  • Deadline to pay full amount is Thursday, May 3rd at 5:00 p.m. If a student makes a deposit but does not attend, the remaining amount will be charged to his or her bursar account.

  • If a student pays the full $250 fee but does not attend Diversity Leadership Institute, his or her buarsar account will be charged cost for an individual attendee.

  • Students must have a Spring 2017 G.P.A. of 2.5 or above to attend DLI. 

  • The deadline to turn in this application is Thursday, February 15th at 5:00 p.m.

Payments are due to the Office of Diversity and Inclusion located in the Nigh University Center, Room 211. If writing a check, make it payable to the University of Central Oklahoma.
