Honorary Faculty Roles

Mace Bearer

The mace is a ceremonial staff that is carried in before the president at commencement and is carried by the most senior member of the college's faculty.

Gonfalon Carrier

Each college has its own gonfalon, or banner, that is carried by an outstanding faculty member in that college, who leads that college's students in the procession.

Faculty members are an integral part of each student's degree completion. Commencement is a time to celebrate students achievement. There are several ways faculty can be involved in commencement ceremonies:

Academic Processional

The academic processional assembles in the Wrestling Room 30 minutes prior to each ceremony. Regalia is required to participate in the processional.

Faculty Marshal

Faculty marshals are divided into three teams to address the different areas of need at commencement. They are required to report for team meeting two hours prior to the ceremony and assist throughout the ceremony.

Team A: Guide students into their seats and across the platform; perform final checks of hoods and name cards.
Team B: Direct guests and assist with traffic flow in interior doors, foyers, stairwells, and upper deck.
Team C: Meet and guide disabled and elderly guests to special seating on the floor.

Graduate Hooding

A student may request one UCO faculty member to hood them during the graduate ceremony on Friday evening. If you intend to participate in this meaningful way, meet in the HFH Wrestling Room 30 minutes prior to the ceremony to process with your graduates.
