General Information

Dr. Michelle A. Johnson joined the University of Central Oklahoma as an assistant professor in the Department of Adult Education and Safety Sciences in fall 2017. She completed her doctoral degree at Texas A&M University at College Station in December 2017. Her dissertation is titled “From former welfare recipient to frontline worker: The influences of discretionary power and personal experiences”.  Her study focused on how the discretionary power and personal experiences of welfare case managers, who are former welfare recipients, influence their case load management.

During her time at Texas A&M, she worked on various research projects with the Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning and the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development. She has an active research agenda that focuses on three primary areas: (1) adult education programs and policies for minorities and women; (2) adult education in workforce programs and the community; and (3) diversity issues and the role of higher education.

She is actively engaged in the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education. She is a current member of the national organization and in the past served as the Graduate Student SIG Chair, and more recently served on the conference planning committee.  She also is an active member in the Adult Education Research Conference and the Academy of Human Research Development presenting her research with colleagues at these national conferences.
